Am I eligible for heating assistance?
Eligibility is determined by the local administering agency. Generally, eligibility is based on the size and the total income of your household. Your household income can be no greater than 125% of the Federal Poverty Level. Calculate your possible elligibility.

How much money will I get?
If you are eligible, your heating assistance award will be based on your annual heating cost, household size, and your household income.  Benefit awards range from $25 to $1,000.

Will you pay me directly?
No. In most cases, we will send you an award letter with your award amount and a reference number. We will contact your utility company and give them the award amount and the reference number, and they will apply your award to your bill.

Where do I apply for energy assistance? Can I apply online?
You can see our How to Apply for details about the best way to contact your local agency.  Some agencies take appointments online, others you must call.

Can I re-apply every month?
If you are eligible and your application is accepted, you are granted one award for the current heating season. Generally, the heating season is October through June. You may re-apply at the beginning of the next heating season.

I heat with wood and electricity. Can I have help with both?
Yes. When you apply for assistance, you should designate one kind of heating as your primary heat source.  We may split the award amount between two energy sources, this will vary depending on each situation.

Do I have to own my home?
No. We help homeowners, renters, and people in subsidized housing.

Can I ask for payment assistance even if I don’t have an emergency?
Yes, of course. We would rather help you before you have a heating emergency!
